    Overview:

    Blackhawk is currently seeking a legal counsel to report to the Principal Legal Counsel in Toronto, Ontario. The successful candidate will engage in a variety of commercial transactional matters in support of Blackhawk’s core business of stored value products, promotions and incentive programs in retail, ecommerce, financial services and mobile wallets. In addition, this role will support Achievers, an affiliate of Blackhawk that provides a cloud-based employee recognition and rewards solution with an active listening interface to accelerate employee engagement.


     


    This position requires a self-motivated, entrepreneurial, and “outside the box” thinker with excellent interpersonal skills, an ability to manage changing priorities and a diverse range of legal duties, and a desire to innovate, grow and excel.  The preferred candidate will possess an understanding of and experience with consumer protection, digital commerce and prepaid card products, software licensing agreements, as well as regulatory frameworks relevant to prepaid cards, privacy and anti-money laundering.

    Responsibilities:


    • Drafting, reviewing and negotiating standard and non-standard commercial contracts and technology agreements

    • Drafting and producing other legal documentation and standard forms

    • Reviewing, researching and monitoring changes to relevant law and regulations

    • Support business development and distribution services sales teams

    • Frequent interaction with clients and internal business teams about regulatory obligations and risk management

    • Creating, maintaining and updating templates for Principal Legal Counsel’s review and approval

    • Some travel may be required from time to time, including to the United States

    • Any additional legal or regulatory tasks as required by the business

    Qualifications:

    Education/Experience



    • Law degree with outstanding academic credentials

    • Licensed to practice law in Ontario

    • 3+ years of legal experience, with at least 1 year of experience at a law firm

    • Experience working with consumer financial service laws a plus

    • Knowledge of payments industry a plus
