Overview:

Blackhawk Network seeks an experienced Tax Manager to assist its tax team with various aspects of state tax compliance and consulting, including providing advice and support to internal business units and stakeholders.  This is a hands-on role that requires the candidate to operate successfully in both state income tax and sales/use tax environments.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage state income tax provision as part of quarterly close
  • Monitor state income tax legislation changes and state effective tax rates for impact on the income tax provision
  • Review state franchise, gross receipt, and other state business tax filings
  • Manage relationship with service providers to complete state income tax compliance work for US entities
  • Accumulate, analyze, and process financial accounting data for preparation of state income and franchise tax compliance
  • Manage state apportionment calculations for domestic entities, including work with service providers to determine appropriate sourcing methodologies
  • Lead and manage the response to state income and sales/use tax audits and inquiries
  • Research and conclude advice on state sales/use tax nexus, transactional matters, and mitigation of exposures
  • Prepare general ledger account reconciliations and related entries for state income and sales/use tax accounts
  • Assist with various state income and sales/use tax special projects, as assigned

Qualifications:

Income Tax

 

  • Experience in state income tax work for a “Big 4” accounting firm and/or Fortune 500 corporate tax department is highly desired
  • Experience with ASC 740 Accounting for Income Taxes, including but not limited to annual income tax provision accounting, interim income tax provision accounting, and accounting for uncertain tax positions
  • 6+ years strong experience in state income tax compliance in a corporate environment
  • Experience with state apportionment and, specifically, state sales factor sourcing methodologies for service / non TPP revenue based companies
  • Solid knowledge of accounting theory and financial statement presentation

 

Sales/Use Tax

 

  • Demonstrably strong knowledge of basic to complex state sales/use tax laws and concepts applicable in a majority of the US
  • 5+ years strong experience in leading the response to state and local sales/use tax audits, including dealing and negotiating with auditors, responding to document requests, managing the audit, organizing and analyzing data, and developing and concluding audit-related state filings
  • Ability to research/write advisory memoranda for internal stakeholders concerning complex sales/use tax topics
  • 5+ years experience in state sales/use tax returns preparation and filing
  • Experience in reconciling sales/use tax and related GL accounts

 

Background Requirements

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in tax accounting or equivalent related work experience
    • CPA and/or Masters in Tax desired
  • Ability to research, organize and analyze large quantities of data from multiple sources
  • Self-directed, with the ability to multi-task and prioritize to meet preparation and filing deadlines
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
  • Flexibility to roll up sleeves as needed to work on projects with fellow tax team members
  • Motivated individual with the ability to work with, influence or direct cross-functional project teams
  • High level of integrity
  • Superior proficiency in Excel
  • These factors would favorably differentiate a candidate:
    • Previous work in a FinTech company
    • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics, STO, SureTax, and Vertex
    • Knowledge of Gift Cards and similar Prepaid Products
    • Recent work in US federal income tax matter
