Overview:

The UNIX System Administrator supports Parago’s production application platforms in a tactical operations role responsible for customer service, problem ticket response and resolution, and production server support. Additionally, this position requires basic project planning skills and solutions generation with regard to UNIX technologies.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide intermediate to advanced support for all UNIX-based systems in co-location data center including remote and periodic on-site support
  • Respond to outages within Service Level Agreements and escalate issues per standard procedures
  • Perform physical hardware installation and configuration according to project requirements
  • Troubleshoot software and hardware issues
  • Diagnose system resource constraints
  • Recommend hardware and/or software based on project requirements
  • Collaborate with other departments on large scale projects; provide recommendations based on industry best-practices and team standards
  • Create, modify and maintain UNIX-related scripts and batch jobs
  • Document new processes and changes to existing processes
  • Maintain operating system (OS) stability, including bug fixes, resource utilization, critical process monitoring, OS configuration, and break/fix of OS-level issues
  • Maintain hardware-level stability and availability, including all break/fix issues, hardware replacement, vendor relations, hardware modifications, and hardware/server configurations
  • Maintain the security of UNIX-based systems, including user maintenance (deletions/creations/permissions), patching, application-level permissions, and group creation and modification
  • Participate in on-call pager rotation

Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required:

  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to write complex shell scripts in two or more scripting languages (Perl experience desired)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of enterprise storage architecture design and operations (EMC experience desired)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Sun hardware contract maintenance and field replacement procedures
  • Intermediate knowledge of TCP/IP networking
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of system backup concepts and applications
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of UNIX software installation concepts and practices
  • Intermediate to advanced experience supporting two or more UNIX operating system variants (Solaris 10 required) in a production environment (containers/zones, ZFS, and LDOM desired)
  • Working knowledge of UNIX diagnostic tools with above average command output interpretation
  • Able to communicate effectively at all levels, including direct customers (internal and external), management and co-workers
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and quickly comprehend new technologies

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

 

5-7 years of applicable experience with one or more UNIX operating system variants (Solaris or Linux required). A Bachelor Degree in a related field preferred, but not required.
